Careful Indulgence Ottawa top-five pick: Black Dog Bistro, Manotick.
In case you are wondering…No, I did not mistake this eatery for Ottawa Magazine’s Preston Street favourite, Black CAT Bistro. Black DOG, although easier to get into and more affordable, is no less appealing in ambiance or food quality.
I first discovered this Manotick hit pre-renovation and although the restaurant is almost unrecognizable with its new modern look, the menu remains nearly untouched.
Steak tartare, sea scallops and crab cakes are all shareable and crowd pleasing appetizers. The rest of your dining experience, regardless of the craving you’ve brought with you will be worth your trek to Ottawa South.
For those of you craving a lighter meal, I would suggest ordering the beet salad, served with a generous amount of goat cheese, dressed in an orange, ginger balsamic vinaigrette.
For a heavier choice, their bacon and tomato sandwich served with jalapeno havarti cheese is perfectly salty and best served with their famous matchstick fries and dijonnaise.
For more shareable options, I would suggest trying one of their flatbreads, such as the chicken brie with mushrooms and onions.
If you are in need of satisfying an empty stomach, order the beef bourguigon served in a deep, brown beef gravy with pieces of tenderized beef and veggies on a warm bed of egg noodles. Alternatively, the Black Dog- style paella or Memphis Style Ribs are both incredible.
Black Dog Bistro cuisine is best served with good wine and good conversation :)
